Zoning administration includes preparing and updating zoning, subdivision, sign, floodplain, mining, and other City ordinances related to planning and zoning. These official controls assist in the implementation of the City's long-range planning objectives, and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the community. Zoning enforcement and other related city ordinance criteria is coordinated with the Building Division and Public Safety Department.
The purpose of the Zoning Ordinance is to ensure sound land management and orderly development of the City. It regulates the types of uses that can occur in each zoning district as well as the specific development standards for each zoning district, which control such details as lot sizes and height, size, and use of buildings. The district boundaries are depicted on the City's Zoning Map. The City's Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances are periodically reviewed and revised in order to implement the City's Comprehensive Plan or in response to requests for changes in zoning. Such revisions and requests are reviewed by the Planning Commission and acted on by the City Council after a public hearing.
