Eugene “Bud” Schmidt Named Cottage Grove’s Volunteer of the Year

Cottage Grove, Minn. – April 26, 2017 – Long–time Cottage Grove resident Eugene “Bud” Schmidt was named Cottage Grove’s Volunteer of the Year at the City’s annual volunteer recognition event held April 25.

“I’m especially pleased to present this award to someone who has flown under the radar, volunteering for years unnoticed,” said Mayor Myron Bailey.

Schmidt volunteers by providing tax preparation assistance for seniors in the community, and counseling residents visiting the Senior Center on how to apply for Medicare and other insurance needs.

He has provided countless hours at the Parish of St. Thomas Aquinas on the finance counsel, as a Eucharistic minister, a monthly collections counter, an active member of the Men's Group and a committee member for the annual Mardi Gras fundraiser.

Schmidt is also a talented musician who participates in the Post Office Band entertaining young and old at venues throughout the city and neighboring communities.

“There’s no reason for an award for doing what’s fun,” said Schmidt after accepting his award.  He added that he believes we are all here just to help one another, demonstrating that he lives out his belief that everyone has something to share whether it’s time, talent or treasures.

For the past 31 years, the City of Cottage Grove has recognized its volunteers at an annual banquet held at River Oaks Event Center during Volunteer Appreciation Month.
